CHAPTER ONE

ABSTRACT

The area under study is part of Port Harcourt S.E. (the dioubu, Amadi Creeks and environs). It is enclosed by latitude 40 451 – 40 491 and longitude 70 00 -70 031 E. the analysis is essentially drainage. It involves basically, the measurement of the measurable features of stream networks and drainage basins such as stream gradient ratio, bifurcation ratio, stream length ratio, drainage density, basin area ratio, bifurcation ratio, stream length ratio, drainage basins such as stream gradient ratio, bifurcation ratio, stream length ratio, drainage density, basin area ratio and dimension less ruggedness number of the two underdrainage basin area ratio and dimensionless raggedness number of the two inter drainage basins delineated in the area.

Geology, particularly lithology, has been important in the development of the drainage system in the area. For example, the low bifurcation ratios and low drainage densities of the bassins, were affected by the resistances and fairy dense clay that arte impervious which serves as bedrock to the streams. Other factors such as vegetation are required to explain the characteristics of drainage in this area.

Drainage analysis of this kind is of importance to the water supply, sewage disposal, water-clay transpiration planning, road-construction and particularly the flood control (in this case of study).

This work can also be of use in photogeologic interpretations of the area under study since it provides clues as to the nature of the bedrock of drainage ways.

1.2 INTRODUCITON

The work is mainly on the drainage analysis of the area under study, which is a method of getting accurate data of measurable features of stream networks and drainage basins. Quantitative data thus acquired can be interpreted to give an insight as to the qualitative properties of the system under consideration, and also the compares of the individual drainage basins.

In analysing the driange problem of Diobu (D-line) and environs four morphological/lithological units were delineated based on field observation; mangrove swamp, saltwater/Freshwater swamp and meander belts and their propable effect on the drainage network. It also provides clues of structural geomorphology and affords criteria of judging individual basins.

The linear aspect of the drainage basins, their areal extend and relief measures were analysed.

Methods for possible solutions to flooding were suggested; with the analysis as basins.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF PROJECT

The aim of this paper is to present a solution to the drainage (fkiidubg) problem of Diobu (D-line) and its eenvirons, the casue of floding along some major junctions across the Diobu and Amadi Creeks and around the surrounding residential areas during heavy down pours and in the rainy season.

The two main aspects to be considered are: effects by man and Lithology which has changed the drainage basin characteristic within the area of study. Changes effected by man includes: the building of houses in the flooprone areas, as such the creeks cannot store excess water for later run off. Urbanization has resulted to the construction of pavements (Driveways, parking lot), and subsequently fair groundcover and high soil loss which prevents infiltration to the groundwater bodies leading to increase overland flow and less base flow and thus much sediments are transported to the creeks. The sub-standard nature of the culverts built across the creeks which covers about three-qurter in such places has contributed much to the problem because the channel flow is reduced drastically at this points.

Many of these has instigated changes of stream flow and sediment and solute production and subsequently result in modification of channel geometry channel pattern and drainage network.

Lithologically the area is in the sedimentary terrain consisting of sands and silty sands and fairly dense classy. This has resulted to the less resistance and the impervious nature of the days which serves as bedrock to the streams. These has resulted to the low bifurcation ratio, drainage densities of the basins etc. Which has contributed to the problem.

The methods for possible solution to flooding are considered in chapter 3-2 and chapter vii.

LOCATION

The study areas lies on the South Eastern part of Port Harcourt. The administrative map of Rivers State proeuced by the Federal Ministry of Lands and Surveys (1982) Fig.2 shows the project area to be located on the Eastern part of the Niger Delta.

The area of study lies approximateluy between latitude 40 451 – 40 491 and longitude 70 001 – 70 031E. The Diobu creek encompasses six of the study areas (A-F), while Amadi Creek flows through study area C.

The study areas is accessible by land (round) and air. Portions accessible by sea only are study areas E and F. the study areas are typified by the existence of bridges and culverts across the Diobu and Amadi Creeks.

The areas are located at mile I, II, III Rumueme and Amadi Flats for areas of the Diobu Creek, while Elekahia/Trans-Amadi road for Amadi creek.
